Millions Celebrate Diwali

golden temple india diwali fireworksMillions of Hindus, Buddhists, followers of Sikhism and Jainism around the world have been celebrating Diwali this week. The festival marking the end of the harvest season is celebrated for five consecutive days, and on the third day it is the main Diwali festival or “Festival of Lights.”

During the celebration, people light up fireworks, diyas and candles around their homes and exchange gifts. At night they pray and seek divine blessings from their gods, including the Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi.

In Delhi, India at least 267 out-of-control fire incidents were reported during the festival according to Indian fire officials.
