Rusted Root met with one of their long-time fans our Editor in Chief Joe Nov. 1 at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA to discuss their music, new album Stereo Rodeo and various other topics.

The three founding members from the Pittsburgh, PA based band Patrick Norman, Michael Glabicki and Liz Berlin sat down for the conversation, which you can hear below.

Liz is on vocals and percussion; Patrick is on vocals, bass, percussion and guitar; Michael is on lead vocals, guitar and percussion. All of them compose their songs.

Numerous topics were discussed including: music; composing; touring; their independent record label Touchy Pegg; Pittsburghese slang; politics; Bush v. Their concert was entertaining and full of energy! They played for about an hour and a half with some breaks and an encore.

Songs included: “Dance In The Middle;” “Give You The Grace;” their new version of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds;” “Back To The Earth;” “Martyr;” “Weary Bones;” “Animals Love Touch;” “Food and Creative Love;” “Crucible Glow;” a re-worked version of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl;” fan favorite “Send Me On My Way;” “Lost In The Crowd;” “Laugh As The Sun.”

Hawaii; CA Lisa; Rusted Root 067After their break, they came back with some new songs and old favorites: “Driving One;” “Stereo Rodeo;” “Driving Two;” “Rain;” “Ecstasy;” “Blue Diamonds;” ending with “Beautiful People.”

Everyone in the band plays a little percussion with various instruments from around the world: hand drums; shakers. Liz played her Zydeco frottoir rubboard that she has used for years. Another unusual instrument was the hulusi, a double-reed Chinese gourd flute, played by percussionist Preach Freedom.

Other band members are guitarist and percussionist Colter Harper, guitarist Dirk Miller and percussionist Jason Miller.
