Obama and John Edwards Secret Deal Outed
President Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe claims in his new book that scandal-plagued Presidential candidate John Edwards tried to seal a secret deal with Obama in exchange for nomination as Vice President.
Plouffe states in his new book The Audacity to Win that the Edwards campaign made the offer prior to the 2008 South Carolina primary when Hillary Clinton and Obama were nearly equal in popularity.
At the time, Edwards believed he had “maximum leverage” to win the South for whichever candidate gave him the VP nomination on the Presidential ticket and pledged to drop out of the race in exchange for the nomination.
“All things being equal, John prefers Barack,” Plouffe stated in his book. “They should announce they are joining forces and will run as a ticket. Edwards can vouch for Obama with blue-collar and Southern whites and is running on a change ticket.”
According to the book, Obama and Edwards discussed the deal, but Obama decided he would not endorse Edwards.
Plouffe stated Hillary Clinton’s campaign would have approved the VP deal, but she was not the first choice.
However, Plouffe did not mention in the book that the National Enquirer had already outed Edwards’s extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter and had claimed him as the father of her baby.
This accusation may have factored into Obama denying the nomination deal.
The periodical also revealed that the Edwards campaign had created an evacuation plan shortly after offering the VP deal in order to nix his nomination chances because they had to protect his alleged affair, child and misappropriation of campaign funds from exploding into main-stream news.
